Cruise in Courtown |
Well it was a Good cruise, appart from the Pyrotecnics. Heres What the Tabloids had to say...
"Souped-up cars cause chaos in Courtown" High-powered car enthusiasts ran amok in Courtown Harbour on Saturday as they invaded the popular holiday resort and caused intimidation and terror. An estimated 200 owners of souped-up vehicles from all over the country descended upon the village on Saturday afternoon and began their 12-hour reign of chaos. Gardai believe the Courtown incident was the latest in a series of meetings known as 'Operation Burnout' which have already taken place at other locations throughout Ireland, and which are organised through coded messages on the internet and on mobile phones. The car racers - whose vehicles are all privately-owned and fully insured - took over the main car park opposite the Courtown Hotel for long periods throughout Saturday night and the early hours of Sunday, leaving a trail of litter and destruction in their wake.

Countless broken bottles and tin cans were strewn about throughout the car park following their departure, while tyre marks caused by handbrake turns and other dangerous driving manoeuvres obscured many of the white lines only recently painted by the County Council on the newly-surfaced car park to mark out parking spaces. Meanwhile, the new parking area only recently laid down by the Courtown Community Council alongside the nearby pier also had its surface almost completely destroyed, and skid marks were also left at various other places throughout the village. Some of the car racers also made their way into Gorey, where they behaved in a similar fashion in the car parks at both the town's Little Theatre and Tesco supermarket before returning to Courtown. Several people who were in Courtown Harbour on Saturday night have said they were extremely frightened by the many speeding cars. 'There were so many people around that a tragic accident could very easily have been caused by one of these maniacs,' one of them said this week. Officers from Courtown Garda Station were joined by colleagues from Gorey in attempting to take action against the offenders, but were limited in what they could do for much of the night because they were so outnumbered. They managed however to eventually take details of many of the drivers and vehicles involved in the madness, and a senior Garda source this week reported that files are being prepared for the DPP.
